Thousands of migrants that came from Venezuela have been forced to set up makeshift camps in the Mexican border city of Juarez, right across El Paso, Texas, following the Biden administration change in Title 42 that added Venezuelans to the expulsion list.
Migrants stuck in Juarez have told journalists that they have been struggling from the cold temperatures in the area. “My baby almost got hypothermia last night because he was very cold. he was turning purple.” one Venezuelan mother told Daily Caller reporter Jorge Ventura.
The same migrant also stated that they fear getting deported from the United States due to the chance of getting sent to another Mexican border city that is unknown to them. “They are returning us further in the border and I will not have any way to return here.” the mother told Ventura.
Title 42 is a policy implemented during the Trump administration at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 which allows health officials to turn away asylum-seekers to prevent the introduction of communicable diseases.
A group of deported Venezuelan migrants previously protested at the port of the entry in Matamoros, Tamaulipas due to the policy change.
El Paso is one location that began to see a massive increase in migrants crossing illegally into the United States in 2022, with many of them not just ending up in Juarez, but also throughout the Texas border city.
United States Customs and Border Protections data shows that the 2022 fiscal year, which ran from October 01, 2021 to September 30, 2022, resulted in 2,766,582 total enforcement actions.
