CBP data has shown that over 250 thousand migrants crossed illegally into the United States during December 2023.
Most of the illegal crossings in December took place at the Tucson sector in Lukeville, AZ, with over 66 thousand migrants arriving illegally into the location. Over 60 thousand were also encountered in Eagle Pass, TX at the Del Rio sector.
The recent surge in Eagle Pass forced CBP officials to shut down vehicular travel at International Bridge 1, resulting in millions of dollars in trade lost and local businesses being heavily impacted by the economic damage. The closing of Bridge 1 also resulted in people taking up to 12 hours to legally enter Eagle Pass by vehicle through Camino Real International Bridge.
The surge also resulted in CBP officials setting up a massive make-shift apprehension site underneath the Camino Real International Bridge.
Large migrant groups continued heading to the Rio Grande from Piedras Negras during Christmas to illegally cross the southern border.
Another caravan of 8 thousand migrants are also expected soon after they announced that they left Tapachula and are headed to the southern United States border.
CBP data has shown the amount of total enforcement actions consistently going up each fiscal year since 2021. The 2022 fiscal year saw a record-high of 3,201,144 total enforcement actions. The 2024 fiscal year has so far recorded 617,865 actions.
